Duskmourn’s Story

Duskmourn’s story begins much like any other – with a young girl, and the demon she unknowingly unleashed.

The Plane of Duskmourn was once a vibrant and growing plane with technology, before a demon known as Valgavoth expanded the boundaries of the house to which he was bound in an effort to consume both the plane itself, and everyone within it. The House has now taken over all of Duskmourn – and, thanks to the newly-created Omenpaths, is beginning to reach out into other planes for new victims.

The plane is inhabited by demons, beasties, gremlins, awakened toys, ghosts, giant wicker monstrosities, cultists, and more – Duskmourn promises a frighteningly good time for any fans of classic horror!

Mechanics

Duskmourn is chock-full of terrifying new mechanics. Let’s dive in:

Rooms

Room is a new enchantment subtype found on a new style of split cards. These new split permanents feature two halves, or two doors. You pick one door to “unlock” when you cast it – gaining the benefits of any “When you unlock this door” effects, as well as any static or triggered abilities on that half. But don’t despair just yet – you can still unlock the second half of the card! To do so, just pay the mana cost for the unlocked door. This happens as a sorcery, but is a special action that does not use the stack and cannot be interacted with. Once both doors are unlocked, you have the full benefits of both halves of the card. Any “When you unlock this door” effects trigger at the time you pay its mana cost.

It's worth noting - While on the battlefield, a Room card has the characteristics of its unlocked doors. For example, if only Porcelain Gallery is unlocked, the permanent's mana value is 6. If both doors are unlocked, the permanent's mana value is 8. Similarly, if both doors are unlocked, the permanent has two names. In your library, graveyard, and hand, a Room card has the combined mana value of both of its halves and both of its names. For example, if an effect allowed you to search your library for a card with mana value 3 or less, you couldn't find Dollmaker's Shop // Porcelain Gallery, even though Dollmaker's Shop has a mana cost of 1W, because the mana value of the whole card is 8.

If a Room enters the battlefield without being cast, it will enter with both doors locked – but you can pay the mana cost for one or both doors any time you would be able to cast a sorcery. In addition, if you copy a Room, that copy will have the same doors unlocked as the original – and any locked doors are still available to be unlocked.

Manifest Dread

Manifest Dread is an ability meant to induce the fear of the unknown in your opponent by playing with the existing Manifest mechanic. Whenever a card tells you to Manifest Dread, you will look at the top two cards of your library and place one of them face-down on the battlefield (the other goes to your graveyard). That card is now a 2/2 creature that is colorless with no name, no creature type, no abilities, and no mana cost.

While you can Manifest any card, it’s a good idea to focus on creatures – a Manifested creature card can be turned face up at any time by paying its mana cost. Much like unlocking a room, this is a special action that doesn’t use the stack and can’t be interacted with, but you don’t have to wait until you can cast a sorcery to flip it. Simply reveal that it is a creature, pay its mana cost, and flip it. It immediately has all the characteristics of the creature – so if someone is targeting your 2/2 with Lightning Bolt, you can flip it into its higher toughness and survive the hit.

Survival

Survival abilities are specific abilities that trigger at the beginning of your second main phase, as long as the creature with the ability is tapped. Survival does not care how that creature came to be tapped – it could be by attacking, being the target of an ability, or some other way.

All creatures with a Survival ability have the new Survivor creature type.

Eerie

Eerie abilities are triggered abilities that trigger whenever an enchantment you control enters and whenever you fully unlock a Room. The first trigger condition means an eerie ability can potentially trigger twice thanks to a single Room card, once when it enters and again when it becomes fully unlocked.

Impending

Impending is a new keyword found on a cycle of Overlords that lets you cast them ahead of schedule. You can cast them for an alternative (reduced) Impending cost, and they will enter with a number of Time counters on them. The card is not a creature until all time counters have been removed – losing one at each of your end steps. This means that it can’t attack or block, or be the target of any spells or abilities that target creatures.

Each Overlord comes equipped with an “Enters” ability that triggers regardless of if it is Impending or cast normally.
